Culture Critique : Man's Best Lunch? You are NOT on the DirtyGreek.Org homepage. Please CLICK HERE to go there. AmericaBlog points us to a story about Hawaii's proposed legislation to ban the slaughter of dogs and cats for food. There are lots of people who are very upset about this, including Asians, who say it's racist against them because they are the ones who typically eat dog and cat meat. Now, I agree with Chris that I have no intention of eating a dog or cat any time soon. However, different people of different cultures in different places eat different things. It's no more wrong to eat a dog than it is to eat a cow or a pig. Jews think it's wrong to eat pork and shellfish. Hell, the Old Testament says that you should be punished the same for eating shellfish as you should for being a homosexual - stoned to death. This sort of reminds me of a story from a while back in which the ASPCA its "Humane Award" for saving her kitten from a python. While a cute story, it actually made me worry a little bit. It's "humane," apparently, to make a snake go hungry by stealing its lunch away from it. Of course, there's nothing wrong with the little girl saving her kitten, and it was certainly very brave of her. They could have given her some other kind of award, a bravery award or something, for fighting off a python. Instead, however, they awarded her for helping save a kitten (one of the animals we like) from a python (one of the animals we typically don't like), even though to the animal world what she did was anything but humane. So, though I don't want any cat burgers any time soon, I say if you want to eat man's best friend, it should certainly not be illegal, so long as the animal is humanely treated and wasn't, you know, stolen from someone's back yard or something.
