The fox guarding the henhouse. That's all it is. In yet another slap in the face to those of us who see the connections between the current situation and Orwell's 1984, they've hired the "Chief Privacy Officer" of a SPYWARE MAKER to the post of Department of Homeland Security's "Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee." The mere fact that a company like Gator (now called Claria) even has a "Chief Privacy Officer" is laugable, but the idea of him being the CPO of Homeland Security is nothing short of frightening."The Department of Homeland Security has named Claria, an adware maker that online publishers once dubbed a "parasite," to a federal privacy advisory board.
An executive from Claria, formerly called Gator, will be one of 20 members of the committee, the department said Wednesday.
"This committee will provide the department with important recommendations on how to further the department's mission while protecting the privacy of personally identifiable information of citizens and visitors of the United States," Nuala O'Connor Kelly, the department's chief privacy officer, said in a statement.
Claria bundles its pop-up advertising software with ad-supported networks such as Kazaa. Recently, the privately held company has been trying to seek credibility by following stricter privacy guidelines and offering behavioral profiling services to its partners. |
And before you go telling me this is like companies hiring reformed hackers to secure their systems, let me go ahead and tell you you're wrong, because this guy isn't a techie. He's just a lobbyist. A management type. No real technical experience or knowlege at all. I didn't know this until I was reading the Slashdot article about the story, but apparently Homeland Security's own Chief Privacy Officer was last the CPO for DoubleClick, yet ANOTHER spyware company. I mean, are you kidding me? Any minute now, I'll wake up. I'll realize this was all just a bad dream, and the United States government HASN'T gone completely fucking bonkers.
Won't I?
A Slashdot poster makes this point:" A former Corporate data gatherer of consumer information being appointed to "Data Privacy" Czar?
Why, that would be like appointing a Torture Advocate to Attorney General...oh wait...Alberto Gonazales
That would be iike appointing a person that misadvised a Nation to start a war that broke down International Relations to a postion that requires her to Strengthen International Relations...oh wait...Condeleeza Rice
That would be like having a former CEO of company that derives it's revenue from war be elected to a political office that can Strongly influence War Power making decisions...oh wait...Dick Cheney |
I'm pinching myself... it isn't working.
Hello? Someone wake me up! I'm stuck in this nightmare!
