If we are saying that the loss of species in and of itself is inherently bad -- I don't think we know enough about how the world works to say that.

Here, a hot protestor makes me want to visit Lebanon.

The Lebanese government has resigned after huge street protests in response to the murder of an ex-Prime Minister by what is believed to be Syrian forces operating in the country. The Bush admin wants Syria out of Lebanon as well, and has celebrated the retirement of the government in favor of an anti-Syrian government.

However, this is another one of those interesting American short-term memory things, since in 1991 the U.S. "quietly supported the Syrian assault" against the Lebanese nationalists in power at the time, a fact which David Brooks is happily ignoring.
