We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if mankind is to survive.

Maybe I'm alienating myself from my environmental catastrophe brethren, but I was thinking about something this morning, and I can't shake it. We all know the predictions being made about the end of civilization, peak oil, environmental catastrophe, and the like. But, what if the reason we think that things are so bad now is that we have so much more information now? I mean, we have evidence of more environmental problems, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc... but could that just be because the world has never been more connected? Also, people have never lived in so many places as they do now, so that means more people being hurt by these problems.

I know that it's just as likely that now that we have more information, we can realize what we've been doing wrong before it's too late, but I just wanted to get this idea out there. After all, if environmentalists are anything like religious doomsayers, we have a good chance of embarassing ourselves with long timelines of incorrect predictions.

To be fair, here's a list of things that could cause the end of civilization.
