I see and admire your manner of liv-ing. . . . You can do almost what you choose. You whites possess the power of subduing almost every animal to your use. You are surrounded by slaves. Everything about you is in chains, and you are slaves yourselves. I fear that if I should exchange my pursuits for yours, I, too, should become a slave.

Dirty Greek - The Houses of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act
Tarheel State : The Houses of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act

The Waynesville, NC baptist minister who tried to excommunicate Democrats from his church has resigned. Good thing, too, because if he hadn't, his church could have lost its tax exempt status... That is, of course, until North Carolina manages to pass The Houses of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act, which would "amend the Internal Revenue Code to state that churches and other houses of worship shall not lose such designation because of the content, preparation or presentation of any homily, sermon, teaching, dialectic or other presentation made during religious services or gatherings."

In other words, any church that decided to become a political organization (say, for instance, one that wanted to kick out all the Democrats) could still be tax-exempt. Now, I don't think churches should be tax-exempt anyway. I think that clearly violates separation of church and state, and as money-making entities (most of the time) I think churches should pay taxes just like everyone else. Nonetheless, if they become political in ANY way, there's no way in Hell (or where have you) that they should remain exempt.
