Dean says that the Republican Party is "...a pretty monolithic party. They all behave the same. They all look the same. It's pretty much a white Christian party."

And? You know, he said "pretty much," and he's right. He didn't say "all white christians," he said "pretty much." Let's examine this, shall we?
"The Republican Party, as represented by its affiliated lawmakers in the state legislatures, is almost 99 percent white, 82.2 percent male, and 1.1 percent minority. By contrast, Democratic state lawmakers are about 80 percent white, 72.6 percent male, and 20.1 percent minority.

As of early 2004, the Republicans have no minority representation in 25 states, but there are only 5 states in which the Democrats have no minority representation, and these five are states with small percentages (3.5 to 12.7 percent) of minorities. In no state does the percentage of Republicans in the legislature approach the percentage of minorities in the state, whereas on the Democratic side, there are 20 states in which the percentage of minority hovers near the state's minority percentage.
CNN'S 2004 Presidential Election Exit Polls give us some really great data on the questions of race and religion in politics. Here's what they have to say about race:

Whites: 58% voted for Bush
African Americans: 11% voted for Bush.
Latinos: 44% voted for Bush.
Asian: 44% voted for Bush.
Other: 40% voted for Bush.

By the way, what he actually should have said was "White, Christian, Old, Rich, Male party." According to the exit polls, as income rises, so does the chance you voted for Bush. More men than women voted for Bush, and the older you are the better the chance you voted for him as well.

Ok, great. Let's go for the painfully obvious religion question:
"Exit poll data indicate that about 25 percent of the people who voted in November 1994 were white evangelical Christians. Among these, about two-thirds voted Republican. There was nothing "stealth" about it. The stated agenda of the Christian Right in 1994 was to help deliver the Senate and Congress to the Republicans-and to credibly claim credit for doing just that. Each time around, the Christian Right is doing a better job of getting its people to the polls. In the 1992 presidential election, about 18 percent of the voters were self-identified white evangelicals. The figure for the 1990 midterm election was 15 percent.

The trend began in the late 1970s when the Christian Right registered several million new voters to vote for Ronald Reagan. In 1980, when Reagan won with only 26 percent of the eligible electorate, white evangelical voters accounted for two-thirds of Reagan's ten-point lead over Jimmy Carter. Then in 1984, the Christian Right pulled out all the stops to re-elect Reagan. In 1992, despite Bush's defeat, exit poll data showed that there were only two constituencies consistently loyal to the Republican Party: people with incomes over $200,000 a year, who are few in number, and the Christian Right.
How about today? Here's more data from the 2004 Exit Polls:

Religion: 69% of Protestants, 52% of Catholics, 25% of Jews voted for Bush.

"Born again christians:" 78% voted for Bush.

By church attendance: Church more than weekly - 64% for Bush.
Weekly, 58% Bush... all the way down.
The more often you go to church, the more likely you voted for Bush.

Gay, lesbian, bisexual - 23% Bush.

Most important issue is moral values? 80% voted for Bush.

Most important value is religious faith? 91 PERCENT BUSH.

Abortion should always be illegal - 77% Bush.

No legal recognition for same sex couples - 70% Bush.

So, tell me... what's wrong with what Dean said?

UPDATE: Dean defends his comments basically the same way I did, then the Chairman of the GOP says "a lot of folks who attended my Bar Mitzvah would be surprised" he heads a Christian party." Again, that's not what Dean said. The chairman also said that "we gotta get ourselves beyond this point where when we disagree about politics, we call the other guy names." Wow.
