Yes, it's illegal for two unmarried people of different sex to cohabitate in NC. The ACLU is currently challenging this law in a case involving a female police officer who was forced by her boss to either move, quit her job, or get married. She quit and is now suing, but she's actually just suing for legal fees and to get the law ruled unconstitutional.

We upped the silly 6% alcohol law, folks, so now let's go after this one. This is actually much worse, because it's unconstitutional rather than just silly. Oh, by the way, it's illegal to have unmarried sex in NC as well. Neither of these laws is enforced often, but there is a Judge in NC I know of who uses cohabitation as an excuse to deny parole to people.
