People will listen when they're ready to listen and not before. Probably, once upon a time, you weren't ready to listen to an idea than now seems to you obvious, even urgent. Let people come to it in their own time. Nagging or bullying will only alienate them. Don't preach. Don't waste time with people who want to argue. They'll keep you immobilized forever. Look for people who are already open to something new.

This story about how global warming is being taught in schools is another in a long line of stories about people who don't "get it."
"As global warming has shifted from the subject of scientific trade journals and alternative media to the center of the public and political arenas, it also has become a hot topic in public schools. That has some parents questioning what their children are hearing. Parents who disagree with the global warming theory, or who chalk it up to environmental alarmists or political hyperbole, are finding that their points of view aren’t given the attention afforded the “other side.”
I was ready to yell at my computer screen, but then I read this point in the article, and I at least felt calmer then:
"All scientific theories are just that — theories. Cell theory and atomic theory aren’t “proven,” just as the global warming theory isn’t proven, says Judy Allard, a biology teacher at Burlington High School. At some point, cell and atomic theories were controversial, too; but these days, a parent would be hard-pressed to find a public school that spent equal time teaching opposing cell or atomic theories.
Exactly what I was yelling. I'm so tired of people talking about how evolution or global warming are "just theories," as though other scientific ideas are pure facts that are 100% inscrutable. This simply isn't the case. Often, a scientific theory remains a theory. What makes a theory a good one to believe is if it withstands the tests of time and inquiry. There are people who believe that global warming is caused by aliens, too - should we give their theories equal time? Of course not. The theories that need to be taught are those that are the most reliable and have withstood the most scientific study, and that is what is being done with global warming and, also importantly, evolution.

Not sure if I agree

I am not sure if I agree with your assertions.

While it is valid to teach evolution and global warming as theories, they must be described as theories not fact. The goal of schools in this area should be about the scientific method: hypothesis and then test. I remember many "theories" that were taught in my primary years (a long time ago) that were since proven to not be fact.

Certain theories have withstood the test of time and it is likely that they will never be disproven. A simple walk through http://www.globalwarming-factorfiction.com will show that Global Warming is not in that league. There a hundreds of well credentialed scientists that question many of the conclusions of the IPCC.

Schools should teach as theory - not fact.

Thanks for your response. Maybe I wasn't clear, but I'm saying exactly what you are - that it should be taught as a theory. What I'm saying, however, is that the word "theory" is being misused by many as describing something that could very well be not true. A theory, before it is taught as scientific standard, is held up to many tests and quite a lot of time before it is taught that way. Scientific theories can often not be disproven, so the question basically boils down to how long a theory should withstand the tests of time and inquiry until they can be taught seriously. Both evolution and global warming, in my opinion, and in the opinion of school systems and most of the scientific community, have long ago reached that point.

Theory

Theory:

In common usage, people often use the word theory to signify a conjecture, an opinion, or a speculation. In this usage, a theory is not necessarily based on facts; in other words, it is not required to be consistent with true descriptions of reality. True descriptions of reality are more reflectively understood as statements that would be true independently of what people think about them.

In science, a theory is a mathematical description, a logical explanation, a verified hypothesis, or a proven model of the manner of interaction of a set of natural phenomena, capable of predicting future occurrences or observations of the same kind, and capable of being tested through experiment or otherwise falsified through empirical observation. It follows from this that for scientists "theory" and "fact" do not necessarily stand in opposition. For example, it is a fact that an apple dropped on earth has been observed to fall towards the center of the planet, and the theory which explains why the apple behaves so is the current theory of gravitation.
