The earth I tread on is not a dead, inert mass. It is a body, has a spirit, is organic, and fluid to the influence of its spirit, and to whatever particle of that spirit is in me. She is not dead, but sleepeth.
Simple is a shoe company going a new direction. From their site:
Sometimes our progress is notable while at other times the improvements are harder to come by. The important thing is were committed to making our product 100% sustainable. Finding materials and processes that make our products sustainable is a method we call Green Toe. It isnt a magical formula, or a cure. It is a compass that, we hope, points to a bright green future. Progress in Green Toe is measured with a scale called good, better, best. The best category represents our most sustainable shoes and bags and sets the bar for the rest of the line. Moving forward these same innovative materials and constructions will be found in the good and better categories, raising the bar for the best products.
They use water based glued, bamboo, jute, cork, organic cotton, etc. Now, full disclosure, my dad is the store manager of the largest shoe store in the southeast, Tops For Shoes. However, I heard about these shoes forever ago, before his store even had heard of them. I suggested them to him, and he said he'd look into it, but nothing came of it. Well, a few weeks ago I was in Asheville visiting, and I saw they had a few pairs of women's shoes from Simple on the racks, and they said they could order me some. My fiancee got a pair of the Toetems, and I'm getting a pair of the Play Toes (get it?)
I'll let you know how they feel later.
UPDATE 4/28/2007: I love these shoes. They look good, they're comfortable, and they seem to be really well-made.
