Hatred ever kills, love never dies; such is the vast difference between the two. What is obtained by love is retained for all time. What is obtained by hatred proves a burden in reality for it increases hatred.

Dirty Greek - Iraq Constitution Signed

Well, it looks like the Iraqis have signed their new constitution afterall. While I congradulate the Iraqi people on their new, in-the-works democratic government, I can't help but be skeptical. I just don't see how democracy can be anything but home-grown, and using force from outside to help it along just doesn't seem to be working very well. The document isn't a permanent constitution, just a temporary one until 2005 when a national vote is supposed to secure a final document. This one contains a 13-item bill of rights and, unfortunately, sets up a national religion - Islam. However, it also allows the Kurds to be autonomous for now, which I think is a good idea.

So, although it doesn't look like this constitution is going to be as open minded about religion as ours, which I think totally ruins the point of democracy, it's a start. We'll just have to see what happens in the long run, I guess.

This is a draft copy of the constitution. I'm not sure how close it is to the one that was signed, however, so take it for what it's worth.
