 Desperate acts by desperate people, whoever they were. The NYT article there claims 190 killed, 1200 injured. Some say the Basque Seperatist group ETA, but it doesn't seem to fit the ETA's MO. Others say it may have been Al-Queda, because Bin Laden listed Spain along with the countries he said he had the "right to attack" because they had troops in Iraq.
Either way, it's terrible. I was on those trains; my friend has slept at that station.
