Then let me hear no more of our kind's natural necessity to form hierarchical groups. An observer viewing human life shortly after cultural takeoff would easily have concluded that our species was destined to be irredeemably egalitarian except for distinctions of sex and age.

And to me, it seems simple... but perhaps that's the problem. Would it not be much easier to just poll the citizens of Iraq? To let them tell us whether or not they want us there? The poll could be more detailed than that, but if our government is so inetersted in fostering democracy in Iraq, then why aren't we letting the Iraqis, the people who would supposedly be running this democracy, tell us how they want it done? So far, the only people making any decisions are ambassador Bremer and the American government, the American-chosen Iraqi governing council, and bits and pieces of the UN...

Why can't the Iraqis decide anything? I thought that "brown people and Muslims could learn to govern themselves."
