We don't need no mass confusion; we don't need no constitution; we don't need no President to tell us we're free. Everybody wants a little taste of anarchy.

"The White House on Tuesday released documents showing the US had for a period approved the use of dogs in the interrogation of prisoners. But it said the practice was later withdrawn and it denied ever sanctioning torture.

"I have never ordered torture. I will never order torture," President George W. Bush said from the Oval Office.
Then, there's this:
"President Bush claimed the right to waive anti-torture laws and treaties covering prisoners of war after the invasion of Afghanistan, and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld authorized guards to strip detainees and threaten them with dogs, according to documents released Tuesday.

The documents were handed out at the White House in an effort to blunt allegations that the administration had authorized torture against al-Qaida prisoners from Afghanistan and Iraq.

"I have never ordered torture," Bush said. "I will never order torture. The values of this country are such that torture is not a part of our soul and our being."
So, he's never ordered torture - he's just waived anti-torture laws for the good of freedom. You know, the fact that they can do this and nobody in the corporate media calls them out is just completely amazing to me. Here we have a news article in which we are specifically told that Bush waived torture laws, and one paragraph later, he says he's "never ordered torture," and we are just to swallow this tripe?

Froomkin has more on the memos.
