So, I've been watching alot of the Democratic Convention, and I have to say I'm impressed with the optimism and strength they're showing in their talks. They seem very sure of themselves, and they are full of hope and positive words.
There's one problem, though... it really sounds like they're ONLY words. Not to say that their hearts aren't in the right place; Edwards and Kerry both seem like much nicer, more caring people than anyone the Bush administration can throw at us. I keep hearing about "our plan" and "we'll fix it" and the ever popular phrase coupled with magically-appearing signs last night during the Edwards speech: "hope is on the way."
As I said, the problem is that they're just words. What hope? What are you going to do? How are you going to fix things? I keep hearing about how we don't have enough healthcare or enough money for colleges and schools, but then I hear them say at the same time that they'll "use our military might to keep America safe," yadda yadda yadda. That they'll furnish our military with "more modernized hardware" that they "need." The U.S. military needs more modern and better weapons???
Well, guys, if you really want universal healthcare, "one America," and better education, I suggest you stop bullshitting and look at the numbers: 28% of our tax dollars go to current military spending (paying personnel, operations, and not to be forgotten, weapons research). Another 18% goes to past military spending (Interest on National Debt, 80% estimated to be created by military spending). Don't let the fact that these numbers come from warresisters.org fool you, they're from a line by line analysis of the Budget of the United States Government, Fiscal Year 2005.
So, Edwards and Kerry, if you're so interested in fixing our economic, education, and healthcare problems, why don't you start by changing the fact that the majority of our economy rests on giving money to companies that then create the bombs we drop on innocent civilians in countries which are already poverty-stricken? Why don't you pull some of the troops out of these countries, thereby not only lessening the anger we create to form more terrorists, but also giving us more money to spend on this magical thing you call universal healthcare?
The United States citizenry, for the most part, has no idea how much of their money goes to the military, and the fact that "small government Republicans" are the ones currently doing the exorbitant spending (not that Democrats aren't usually just as bad) just is the icing on the cake.
Pull the troops out of Iraq, pull the troops out of South America, stop funding and helping military coups for your own personal gain, and use that money to HELP YOUR CITIZENS. It's the least you can do to apologize for trying to ruin this country because of your greed and the greed of your counterparts across the aisle. Show the world that America is NOT some huge imperialist state and that it DOES care.
