On November 6, the GOP headquarters in Raleigh was vandalized."Vandals spray painted vulgar messages on the walls of the North Carolina Republican Party headquarters and left a burned effigy depicting President Bush and Sen. John Kerry, police said.
Authorities detained several suspects early Saturday, hours after the attacks took place Friday night, but had not filed any charges, police spokesman Jim Sughrue said.
A police officer reported Friday that about 100 people wearing masks and gloves were walking down a street near the headquarters, authorities said.
...
``This is not a political statement,'' Sughrue said. ``A political statement is what we made Tuesday. This is a crime.''
Police said at least two windows were broken and it appeared that the vandals tried to put incendiary devices inside of the building.
Investigators also found a partially burned, two-headed effigy in military fatigues. One head had the face of Bush and the other the face of Kerry. |
Well, the part at the end there in bold tells you one thing; these people weren't just anti-Bush. They were anarchists. That was proven in a later article that stated "The vandals spray-painted a capital "A" inside a circle, an anarchist symbol, on the building and on its sign. The symbols also appeared on a nearby automatic teller machine across from the N.C. State Bell Tower and on another nearby brick building."| "``The people who did this are sick,'' said Kevin Howell, communications director for the state Republican Party. ``People don't understand that debate and elections are part of the process. This isn't how you act.'' |
Many are calling this 'domestic terrorism,' and I even read an article that said the three people who were later arrested, now being called 'The Raleigh Three,' were connected to a group known to be 'domestic terrorists.' No more explanation was given.
Well, I guess it depends on your definition of terrorism, but anarchists aren't usually trying to inspire terror, and they usually aren't trying to hurt anyone. Typically, they're trying to DIRECTLY cause the collapse of the system, not to cause people to be scared into changing things.
As for protesting, they weren't protesting, as I'm trying to explain. They were directly trying to change things. Let it be known that I don't agree with what they did, nor do I think they were going to have any effect. However, I wouldn't call them terrorists, as they weren't trying to scare or harm anyone. They were just trying to directly attack the system they feel is unjust and corrupt.
That said, you wouldn't have women's suffrage, equality rights, the 8-hour day, an end to child labor, or an end to slavery without people who said "fuck protesting, let's end this."
Our rights weren't given to us through voting and protests, we had to wrestle those rights away from the governments who oppressed us. That's always the way it's been. Show me a government who's given up oppression without being forced into it.
FINALLY, let me point something out to you: the three people who have actually been arrested with this crime, the so-called "raleigh three," have not admitted to the crime, nor is there anything more than circumstantial evidence against them.
The police are now under pressure from Republican fanatics to make an example of the innocent prisoners because of the political nature of the street demonstration. As a result, the three are stuck in prison with exorbitantly high bond - $50,000 each - for a “crime” they may not have committed. The police and Republican strategy seems to be to isolate and psychologically wear down the low-income prisoners by making it financially impossible to be freed from jail. The local press has whipped up a sensationalist furor, playing off of fears of anarchists and calling the prisoners “domestic terrorists,” ignoring the total lack of evidence.
Let us not forget that this is supposed to be a nation in which accused criminals are to be given a fair trial to determine their guilt and their fates. These three people were simply near the scene of the crime and are known anarchists. That has been a good excuse for arresting and even executing people, such as the famed Sacco-Vanzetti case and in the many arrests of Emma Goldman and those she was connected to.
An example of the insanity sparked by the idea of ANARCHISTS!"Mathias said Friday's vandalism continues a pattern of illegal political protests in the Triangle in recent months.
* On Feb. 21, two men were arrested and charged with painting slogans on statues, the Capitol and other state buildings before a Neo-Nazi demonstration in downtown Raleigh.
* On June 10 and 11, protesters threw smoke bombs on the railroad tracks in Durham and triggered several automatic crossing gates, clogging traffic. They also unfurled banners from overpasses on Interstate 40 at Miami Boulevard and the Durham Freeway. The action coincided with the end of the G-8 summit at Sea Island, Ga.
Like Friday's incident, the other actions piggybacked on legal demonstrations. They also occurred under cover of dark, without warning, and were committed by masked participants clad in black. |
Did the author just make a connection between Neo-Nazis and Anarchists? I believe he did! Burn the witches!
However, it's not evidence enough to convict. Don't forget that these people you're talking about may not even be guilty of the crimes they're accused of, and they deserve lawyers, fair bail, and fair trials. They're guaranteed those things by the Constitution of The United States.
