So, a 60-day martial law has been declared in Iraq. | " Martial law gives the interim government sweeping authority to impose curfews, order house-to-house searches and close off entire cities. The law took effect immediately and covered the entire country except the northern Kurdish region. |
60 days? Doesn't that mean that it will end right before the "elections" that are to take place in January? It sure does.
Now, you may know something I don't, but how is it possible to hold national elections when, aside from the obvious dangers of just leaving one's home:
1.) There's no electricity in large parts of the country.
2.) Child malnutrition has more than doubled.
3.) Martial law has imposed a curfew on all citizens, including the estimated 120 political parties and individuals who will be running in the elections.
The answer, of course, is that it isn't. Hamid Karzai, the U.S. sweetheart, former UNOCAL oil consultant, "interrim" President of Afghanistan, won the "election" in Afghanistan recently. UNOCAL was negotiating with the Taliban for an oil pipeline through Afghanistan. They'll get it now.
The same will happen with Iraq. Ayad Allawi will, of course, win the position of leader of Iraq, unless he doesn't want to for some reason. A few members of his family were kidnapped recently, and that may help sway him not to stay on. However, if all goes according to plan, this "election" in January, with barely any electricity and food, firefights going on in the background, and no ability whatsoever for those running in the elections to campaign, Allawi will win and the U.S. occupation will continue unabated.
The obvious way to make sure that Iraq has free and fair elections is to delay them until those in the running can campaign and people can be educated on their choices and possibly even guaranteed they won't be blown up as they enter the polls. However, this won't happen, because if it did the U.S. sweetheart Allawi might possibly lose.
My feeling is that the only positive outcome in this situation is that the U.S. says "well, you gotcher democracy, PEACE. We outta here."
