In order for us to maintain our way of living, we must, in a broad sense, tell lies to each other, and especially to ourselves.

If you don't have Media Matters For America (mediamatters.org) in your bookmarks or their RSS Feed in your RSS reader, then you really need to get on the ball.

Media Matters for America is a Web-based, not-for-profit progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media. Conservative misinformation is defined as news or commentary presented in the media that is not accurate, reliable, or credible and that forwards the conservative agenda.

For the first time, Media Matters for America has put in place a system to monitor the media for conservative misinformation -- every day, in real time -- in 2004 and beyond.

One of the long list of "big names" working for Media Matters is Duncan Black, the recently unmasked "Atrios," author of the blog Eschaton.

Just as a sampling of what Media Matters is doing, here is a list of their most recent headlines:

FOX peddles false report that California school "banned Declaration of Independence because it mentions God"
Over the last two weeks, FOX News Channel has repeatedly -- and falsely -- reported that an elementary school in Cupertino, California, banned the Declaration of Independence because it mentioned God.
Conservatives pounced on comments by new Senate minority leader, labeled him a racist
Following incoming Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid's (D-NV) criticism of Justice Clarence Thomas during a December 5 appearance on NBC's Meet the Press, conservative pundits have rushed to label Reid a racist for his remarks. These attacks follow a larger pattern of crying foul whenever Democrats or progressives voice opposition to a minority conservative appointee.
Oil-for-food and European opposition to the war in Iraq: Separating conservative talking points from the facts
Since word of the United Nations' oil-for-food scandal first broke, conservative media figures have been quick to conclude that European nations and political figures that opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq did so because they were bribed by deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Although there is evidence that some political figures from European countries may have been complicit in the scandal, conservatives who have pushed the scandal as the key explanation for European opposition to the war have made assertions unsupported by, and often at odds with, the facts. While some conservatives have specifically accused European leaders of failing to support the war in Iraq because of their alleged interest in the scandal, to date no credible body has directly accused any of wrongdoing.
