I actually thought it was as well, since that's what I've always been told, but apparently the people who told me were misinformed or lying. From Media Matters:In fact, though the Third Geneva Convention defines a category of detainees called "prisoners of war" (POWs) and lays out specific protections for them, the Fourth Geneva Convention ("Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War") lays out separate protections for civilians, including so-called "unlawful combatants," as Media Matters for America has documented. So anyway... yeah. The next time an O'Reilly type or Limbaugh dittohead tells you that the Geneva Convention only applies to POWs and soldiers, you can either tell them they're wrong or smile to yourself.
