So I'm up at dawn, puttin' on my shoes. I just wanna make a clean escape; I'm leavin', but I don't know where to.

Dirty Greek - Proxy Servers: Defeat Censorware
Technology : Proxy Servers: Defeat Censorware

Do you live in a country or work at a company where certain websites are blocked? Is this website blocked? Heh, I should be so lucky as to be on someone's list, eh? Of course, as far as places of business go, you can't really blame them for blocking certain material. Nobody wants their employees watching porn or reading racist or otherwise dangerous material while they're supposed to be working. Of course, some censorware just blocks websites with certain words in it, which can just be silly sometimes. I mean, what if I'm reading a news story and it happens to mention a man named Donald P. Growingmarijuanainyourcubicle? What if I just don't want anyone tracking where I go on the internet, purely for reasons of privacy?

Countries who block access to certain areas of the internet are a different story, however, so I'm saying right now that I don't advocate doing anything that will get you in trouble at home or at work. Actually, just don't read this at all, because doing so will be in violation of the reading about how to circumvent censorship act of 1984 and therefore will lead to your immediate termination and/or beheading.

However, if you're curious, (Again, this is for information purposes only. Don't come crying to me if you get in trouble) getting around such censors isn't anything like difficult. All you need is a list of proxy servers and about 30 seconds of setup.

A pretty simple way of finding a proxy is to check out Proxy4Free. They have a constantly updated list of proxies listed by country and anonymity level, so it shouldn't be hard to find one you can use to get around your particular problem. Of course, at alot of places these very websites will be blocked (proxy4free is blocked at my place of work) so you may have to try harder to find a list or you may have to get someone to send you a list from the outside. If you're trying this at work, just get the list at home and bring it in to work.

All you have to do once you get the list is select a proxy (getting one in your country will make the connection faster), go to internet settings, go to proxy setup, and input the address and port for the proxy. You can disable the proxy on certain sites like your company intranet and the like and leave it on for all others if you want. You probably will have to disable it for your intranet, actually, because if you don't it will think you're trying to access it from the outside (and technically you are) and you'll be blocked from viewing it.

Voila - you can now read that news story or that completely innocent website that happens to explain how to plant cameras in the women's bathroom. Just fyi, the proxy I'm using right now is IP address 208.31.142.11, port 80. It seems to work pretty quickly, and I can now access those blocked pages or surf free of paranoia... until they realize you're using a proxy and ask you why. However, it's doubtful that you're breaking any rules, and they might just tell you to stop.

Anyway, Enjoy!

UPDATE: I just found a really great and VERY easy-to-use software called FreeProxy. All you do is install it on your uncensored machine (say, your computer at home), take like 30 seconds to set it up, and you have your very own proxy server. You just set up your browser to connect to your home computer's IP address and the port you set FreeProxy to run on and there you go. All anyone's logs will see is that you are connecting to your home computer's IP, and you won't have to worry about the usual problem of public proxy servers that go down after being up for a few days.
