Those who are too lazy and comfortable to think for themselves and be their own judges obey the laws. Others sense their own laws within them; thngs are forbidden to them that every honorable man will do any day in the year and other things are allowed to them that are generally despised. Each person must stand on his own feet.

And the stupid reporters who actually make them think they're not stupid.
Despite the best filters, pornography could still find its way onto children's computer screens -- but perhaps not for long.

A Maryland lawmaker believes he has come up with a simple, cost-free way to block online pornography, television station WBAL reported.
...
The solution? Calling porn what it is by adding ".sex" to the end of the Web site address.
Great idea... if that's how the internet worked. However, it's not, and the person who filed this report and his editors should be barred from ever publishing anything on the internet again until they know how it works. It's 2005, and they should know better.

And scrambling for the delete key? Are you fucking kidding me? What the hell does hitting the delete key do when you're browsing a website? I'm heading over to the Rush Limbaugh website to find out right now; I'll be back with my results momentarily.

Also, another technology blunder:
The bill is being filled as a commercial law, not a criminal matter. ISPs that do not comply would be fined $1,000 per violation.
What the hell does the ISP have to do with whether or not a domain name ended in .sex? ISPs are not responsible for domain names! That's the registrar's jurisdiction!

Now, allow me to ask some questions:

  • What would be classified as sexually-explicit? Nudity? Half-nudity? National Geographic images of topless African tribeswomen? Does the sex have to be anal or just vaginal? What if you can't see penetration? Would there need to be visuals, or would sexual speech be classified as well? Where would the line be drawn as to what needed to be under a .sex domain?

  • Would simply the domain name before the extension be considered as part of the law? For instance, what if I had a non-sexual site with the name www.fuckmeintheass.com? Would that then need to be changed to www.fuckmeintheass.sex, even if the conent was pictures of little bunnies romping in the forest?

  • What happens to domains that already exist and already have a certain domain name? What happens to Penthouse.com? It has to change to penthouse.sex? What about the pages that aren't sexually explicit and/or don't contain nudity? Can they still stay at penthouse.com and just link to penthouse.sex?

  • Has this Smigiel guy ever USED the internet? Does he realize how funny it is that he's named the same as the Gollum in the LOTR stories?

This is yet ANOTHER example of politicians who don't know anything getting involved and pretending like they do. I'm sure this guy's church pals and his 60-year-old Christian wife are patting him on the back for doing such a good job to stem the influx of pornography to our childrens' eyes while, in the background, techies and people who have been online for more than a week are laughing their asses off at him.
According to Smigiel, the feedback so far is universal.

"What took so long? Why didn't anybody think of this before?" he said others say.
Well, they have, you freaking doofus. Lieberman suggested it in 2000. And actually, according to some websites, .sex domains already exist!

Someone get me a drink. I feel alot like Lewis Black right now, except I'm not doing the finger thing.
