After the Dems dispensed with and inane Republican effort to get two months paid vacation at the end of the year, and approved $600 million for a border "security" bill that does nothing to address comprehensive immigration reform in any way, and which the Republicans will continue to bitch about anyway, they got down to the actual business of the day: passing the $26.1 billion to help keep the states afloat for the remainder of the year.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A bill that would send $640 million to North Carolina state government and local schools schools has been signed into law by President Obama.
The U.S. House approved Tuesday a $26 billion bill pushed by Democrats that mostly would pay for extra Medicaid expenses and school districts to preserve teacher positions. Obama signed it later in the day.
State officials say North Carolina's $343 million Medicaid share means state government won't have to take an extra 1 percent cut and withhold pension contributions to narrow a budget gap.
The Department of Public Instruction says nearly $300 million in grants equal about 4,800 teaching positions. Bill McNeal with the North Carolina Association of School Administrators says local districts will be pleased to receive additional money after cutting expenses before the new school yea

Because the woman he was supposed to drive wanted to go to Planned Parenthood. And Mr. Graning believed that she was going to get an abortion. I'm thinking no. And for two reasons: The odds of there being intelligent aliens somewhere in the galaxy, space-faring aliens, are incredibly low, and even if they do exist they'd be so far away that getting here would be a serious problem. Enough that the trip wouldn't be worth it.

Politics : Financial Reform Bill Passes - Heads To President For Signature
It's done. The Senate this morning, by a vote of 60-39 passed the final version of Wall Street reform legislation -- the exact same version the House passed two weeks ago, which will now go the White House for a signature.
The development, though expected for days, represents a major achievement for President Obama and congressional Democrats -- their first landmark bill since health care. And this time it's actually popular.

Newt Gingrich has made headlines recently by writing in his new book, To Save America, that the Obama administration’s “secular socialist machine” represents “as great a threat to America as Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union.” Even Fox News hosts have questioned whether Newt went a bit too far with the comparison. Last night, Fox host Greta Van Susteren wondered as well:
VAN SUSTEREN: All right, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Go a little far on that one?
GINGRICH: No. Because I’m not talking about moral equivalence of the people, I’m talking about the end result. If the Nazis had defeated us, then America as we know it would have disappeared. If the Soviet Union had defeated us, the America as we know it would have disappeared. I argue in this book — and I think it’s a pretty reasoned and compelling argument — that the fact is, the values of a secular socialist movement are antithetical — and you hear from President Obama all the time. … The secular socialist left doesn’t want God anywhere in public life and doesn’t want to acknowledge God anywhere in public life.
Last night, the Wonk Room published a summary of the provisions of the American Power Act, the comprehensive climate and clean energy legislation being introduced today by Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) and Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT). This post delves deeper into the legislation's specific provisions. The following table compares key elements of Obama's campaign promises from 2007 and 2008, the Waxman-Markey American Clean Energy and Security Act as passed by the House of Representatives, and the elements of the Kerry-Lieberman draft legislation, as based on leaked summaries.
Fun!
Important scientific elements in Kerry-Lieberman are the rapid mitigation of super-greenhouse gases and black carbon, as well as natural resource adaptation programs. By the end of 2025 the legislation has shifted to resemble the refund-based auctioned-allowance system promoted by President Obama and advocates of cap-and-dividend.
So does it meet the criteria in "What to look for in the bipartisan climate and clean energy jobs bill"? That would require that the bill help ensure that by the 2020s that we have
° substantially dropped below the business-as-usual emissions path
° started every major business planning for much deeper reductions
° goosed the cleantech venture and financing community
° put in place the entire framework for U.S. climate regulations
° accelerated many tens of gigawatts of different types of low-carbon energy into the marketplace
° put billions into developing advanced low-carbon technology
° started building out the smart, green grid of the 21st century
° trained and created millions of clean energy jobs
° negotiated a working international climate regime
° brought China into the process
Yes, I think it does.
There really is no Plan B. Certainly leaving this to the EPA and a few states won't achieve most of those, especially the crucial international deal.
Sadly, the conventional wisdom is that even this moderate bill has no chance - and I certainly think it doesn't have very much chance if Obama doesn't start pushing for it as hard as he pushed for healthcare.
My oath was to the Constitution, not to the politicians, and that oath will be kept. I won't "Just follow" orders. There is at this time a debate within the ranks of the military regarding their oath. Some mistakenly believe they must follow any order the President issues. But many others do understand that their loyalty is to the Constitution and to the people...
I don't like the sound of this AT ALL. A commenter on TPM points out
Article 88 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice reads, "Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct."
Another reminds us that the pledge these military personnel took said
"obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice, so help me God."
I do, however, like the sound of THAT.
UPDATE: This wholly unimpressive backpedaling press release is hard to take seriously:
"Armed Forces Tea Party Patriots in no way supports a military uprising or anything to that subject, further more we recognize Barak (sic) Obama as the Command-in-Chief and we do not support disobeying orders that are lawful with Constitution, and will continue to follow orders given to us....We do understand that there is a time and place for expression and the military work place is not one of them."
It's hard to believe him, considering he has said
"The armed forces should have a little bit more say than we think we do,"
and
"My oath was to the Constitution, not to the politicians, and that oath will be kept. I won't "Just follow" orders. There is at this time a debate within the ranks of the military regarding their oath. Some mistakenly believe they must follow any order the President issues. But many others do understand that their loyalty is to the Constitution and to the people..."
So, which is it? Were they just talking big earlier, or are they lying now?
Politics : Domestic Terrorism In Austin - Clarification Of My Viewpoint
Before anyone gets angry at me for "politicizing" this, I have no intention of politicizing or scoring points. People have died, and my intentions are to stop it from happening again. Republicans aren't evil. However, people like Glenn Beck and Rush have ginned up so much anger and hate that this sort of thing is inevitable. Obviously, my immediate jumping into this seems tasteless, but I guarantee if he was a muslim, everyone would do the same...
People like David Neiwert at Orcinushave beenwarningthat this sort of thing was going to happen because of all the (semi-understandable, but usually over-the-top) anger by mostly white people about having a black president who they think is a "socialist," even though they can't tell you what that means. I'm literally more afraid of these nutters than I am of foreign terrorists, because they are allowed to just run around pulling shit off like this and are not called terrorists, even by Obama, the "liberal, socialist, radical."
Regardless of the lies spewed by right-wingers about what the DHS's report on domestic terrorism said, it was originally created by the Bush administration, and it too warned about these actions. These problems have been a long time coming, and I'm unsurprised but saddened by them. Please, let's just look at this as what it is - domestic terrorism that likely wouldn't have happened if so much crazy wasn't spilling out of our televisions and radios.
UPDATE: Because it appears the guy was more crazy and less tea party, I retract that part of my assessment. This guy was all over the map, and trying to classify his politics would be like trying to shoot crazy people in a barrel (which I don't advocate, by the way).
How can any rational individual explain that white elephant conundrum in the middle of our tax system and, indeed, our entire legal system? Here we have a system that is, by far, too complicated for the brightest of the master scholars to understand. Yet, it mercilessly "holds accountable" its victims, claiming that they're responsible for fully complying with laws not even the experts understand. The law "requires" a signature on the bottom of a tax filing; yet no one can say truthfully that they understand what they are signing; if that's not "duress" than what is. If this is not the measure of a totalitarian regime, nothing is.

Politics : National Poll of Republicans Provides Shocking, Unbelievable Results
Even I can't believe this. Surely there's some kind of tabulation error? Says he'll release the results probably tomorrow:
Just got back big poll of 2,000 Republicans. Gotta digest it, but
39% of them want Obama impeached.
63% think Obama is a socialist,
only 42% believe he was born in US,
21% think ACORN stole 2008 electionsActually, on the "ACORN stealing 2008 election for Obama" Q, 21% say yes, 55% say "not sure"
53% think Sarah Palin is more qualified to be president than Obama.
23% want to secede from US
73% think gay men and women shouldn't be allowed to teach in public schools
31% want contraceptives outlawed
That's a frightening set of numbers. I can only think of two reasons for these results offhand. One is that this is the response of a primarily white party feeling threatened by a black president, and another is that this is what happens when you lose all power after having most of it for many years. Obviously, I don't think that all or even most Republicans are racist, but this is a very frightening set of numbers.
Research 2000, who did the poll, is connected to DailyKos in that they do polls for them, but it's been pretty good about seeming believable in the past.
Some of our most active media clientele include the Bergen Record, The Raleigh News & Observer, The Concord Monitor, The Manchester Journal Inquirer, The New London Day, The Reno-Gazette, The Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, The Spokesman-Review, KCCI-Television in Des Moines, Iowa, WRAL-Television in Raleigh, North Carolina, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and KMOV-Television in St. Louis, Missouri.
I'm seriously hoping there's some problem here, however, this story makes it even more believable.
About 65% of likely voters said they know just "some" or "not too much" about the Tea Party when asked. Nevertheless, the Tea Party seems to be winning the message war, capturing the voice of populist anger in the country -- the majority of respondents expressed support for the goals of the movement and the people in it.
Pres. Obama today spoke to House Republi-
cans at their two-day retreat in Baltimore, MD. He repeated his State of the Union address plea for bipartisanship on health care and other economic issues. GOP leaders will comment later, following shortly after a question-and-answer session with the President.
Environment : US President Obama gives Clean Energy a $2.3 Billion boost
U.S. President Barack Obama unveiled a $2.3 billion tax credit on Friday to boost jobs by promoting clean energy, as new data showed the country's unemployment rate remained stuck in the double digits.
Obama said the credit, from funds earmarked under a $787 billion stimulus package he signed last February, would create 17,000 U.S. jobs and be matched by an additional $5 billion in private capital.
"Building a robust clean energy sector is how we will create the jobs of the future, jobs that pay well and can't be outsourced," Obama said.
"This initiative is good for middle-class families. It is good for our security. It is good for our planet," he said.
Politics : Barack Obama - Leader? It doesn't appear so...
I don't like agreeing with this, much less anything else in The Huffington Post, but Drew Westen has a point:
What's costing the president are three things: a laissez faire style of leadership that appears weak and removed to everyday Americans, a failure to articulate and defend any coherent ideological position on virtually anything, and a widespread perception that he cares more about special interests like bank, credit card, oil and coal, and health and pharmaceutical companies than he does about the people they are shafting....
Consider the president's leadership style, which has now become clear: deliver a moving speech, move on, and when push comes to shove, leave it to others to decide what to do if there's a conflict, because if there's a conflict, he doesn't want to be anywhere near it.
Health care is a paradigm case. When the president went to speak to the Democrats last week on Capitol Hill, he exhorted them to pass the bill. According to reports, though, he didn't mention the two issues in the way of doing that, the efforts of Senators like Ben Nelson to use this as an opportunity to turn back the clock on abortion by 25 years, and the efforts of conservative and industry-owned Democrats to eliminate any competition for the insurance companies that pay their campaign bills. He simply ignored both controversies and exhorted.
Leadership means heading into the eye of the storm and bringing the vessel of state home safely, not going as far inland as you can because it's uncomfortable on the high seas. This president has a particular aversion to battling back gusting winds from his starboard side (the right, for the nautically challenged) and tends to give in to them. He just can't tolerate conflict, and the result is that he refuses to lead....
The time for exhortation is over. FDR didn't exhort robber barons to stem the redistribution of wealth from working Americans to the upper 1 percent, and neither did his fifth cousin Teddy. Both men told the most powerful men in the United States that they weren't going to rip off the American people any more, and they backed up their words with actions. Teddy Roosevelt was clear that capital gains taxes should be high relative to income taxes because we should reward work, not "gambling in stocks." This President just doesn't have the stomach to make anyone do anything they don't want to do (except women to have unwanted babies because they can't afford an abortion or live in a red state and don't have an employer who offers insurance), and his advisors are enabling his most troubling character flaw, his conflict-avoidance.
We're disappointed, Mr. President. Those of us who worked for your election (the sane ones, at least) still knew you'd be a politician. However, being a politician doesn't mean it's impossible to be a man and fight for the things you at least professed to believe in. Maybe your friendliness with special interests is what actually got you elected. Maybe there were tons of backroom deals, and you offered big business more than McCain could, so they worked harder for you. I'd hate to think that was true, but I'm no sucker.
I think I know what you're trying to do. You're trying to be hands-off in the hopes that you don't appear too liberal and can make it through a reelection that's sure to be difficult. Maybe you're doing that so you can go all-out starting in 2013. However, Mr. President, we don't have that much time. The uninsured don't have that much time. Our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan don't have that much time. Our economy certainly doesn't have that much time.
You can turn this around, Mr. President. If you lead, and you lead fairly, the people will reward you for it with reelection. Right now, things are looking grim for you. I may even campaign for a primary opponent against you or even vote for a third party. The greens are starting to look good...
While voters oppose the health care plan, they back two options cut from the Senate bill, supporting 56 - 38 percent giving people the option of coverage by a government health insurance plan and backing 64 - 30 percent allowing younger people to buy into Medicare.
Now, a majority oppose the bill, but is that because they all oppose some semblance of "liberal" or "socialist" elements of it? Apparently... no:
Ipsos, however, did something that no other pollster has done. They asked the people who opposed the bill why they opposed it: because they are opposed to health care reform and thought the bill went too far? Or because they support health care reform but thought the bill didn't go far enough?
It turns out that a significant minority of about 25 percent of the people who opposed the plan -- or about 12 of the overall sample -- did so from the left; they thought the plan didn't go far enough.
Ipsos also asked a parallel question of people who supported the plan: did any of them support the plan because they oppose health care reform and thought that the plan was sufficiently watered-down so as to "keep health care reform from happening"? A small number of people picked this response: about 10 percent of those in favor of the plan, or 3 percent of the entire sample.
One way to look at this: 43 percent of people favor health care reform, whereas 38 percent oppose it (20 percent are undecided). But the actual plan under consideration gets numbers that are more or less the reverse of that -- 34 percent in favor, 46 percent opposed -- because a significant number of people think the plan doesn't go far enough.
Interesting. Depressing. This is no democracy. This is a corporatist republic.
PZ Myers at Pharyngula says what many of us are thinking: Obama's not only not a socialist; it's hard to call him anything but a corporate centrist.
There are several reasons for my dissatisfaction.
He has failed to support gay civil rights.
The Stupak amendment to the health care bill seems to be sailing through unopposed.
His cozy relationship with Wall Street.
And now, his expansion of the war in Afghanistan, and his support for a corrupt and failed state.
A commenter points out
Don't forget him basically upholding the majority of secrecy and constitutionally questionable tactics his former position holder was so fond of.
Now, PZ is hoping for "some viable, liberal alternative to our crappy incumbent," but that's not happening, obviously. It could have been worse, though... McCain could have won.
Politics : Teabaggers - Yes, it appears that you ARE all Joe Wilson
Love the the people in this video - one lady in particular. "He's going after our kids to try to indoctrinate them into a national defense army... and we're not gonna let him do it."
From this sample of the protesters, we hear conspiracy theories about population control and all sorts of other nonsense.
No, not everyone against Obama is stupid. Obviously. However, the majority of the people who are in on these protests are really, really, really stupid. Or just racist, or know they're just making up nonsense but know that it will help rally the conservative base and help their sponsors.
Certainly there has been some severe stupidity from the left, however, their anger really wasn't at this level until after the war started, which I think at this point almost everyone can understand. The significant majority of the people at these rallies believe the president is not an American, that he is instituting death panels, etc.
The majority of what the left's protesters were angry about has been, for the most part, *proven* to be true. I Think that's a significant difference that must be acknowledged. If it turns out that the insanity most of these people have been spouting is true, then great, vindication.
Joe also has been a member of the Columbia World Affairs Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Sinclair Lodge 154, Jamil Temple, Woodmen of the World, Sons of Confederate Veterans, ....
This is an organization that, as the SPLC has detailed assiduously, has been taken over in the past decade by radical neo-Confederates who favor secession and defend slavery as a benign institution. Leading the takeover is a radical racist named Kirk Lyons, who's been an important legal figure on the far right for some years.
Now, add this to the fact that Joe Wilson, as a state legislator, was one of only seven Republicans to go against their own party and vote to keep the Dixie Rebel flag flying over the South Carolina capitol:
The flag came down that year after Republicans in both houses went for a compromise that would put it on Statehouse grounds at the Confederate Soldier's monument. The 'Magnificent Seven' of Senators who voted to keep the flag up included current Congressman Joe Wilson (who I served with in the 218th Infantry Brigade of the National Guard.)

The official sponsorship list of the rally reveals a subterranean, extreme element of the American right in attendance. One of the top sponsors is the extremist organization Grassfire.org, which runs ResistNet.com for "Patriotic citizens who are opposing the Obama-led socialist agenda." Members of the ResistNet -- who promote anti-semitic Nazi propaganda, claim Obama is a Muslim, and praise the assassination of doctors -- are organized on Grassfire against health care reform ("Government-Run Socialized Health Care"), clean energy reform ("Cap-and-Trade Tax"), and immigration reform ("Amnesty for illegals"). Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) -- who is sponsoring and speaking at the 9/12 rally -- has praised Grassfire.org for its "great service to the American people." The National Association for Rural Landowners, a bronze sponsor, references the incidents at Waco and Ruby Ridge to call for attacks on "government entities" and liberals. In a YouTube video posted in July, the group makes the case for a secession, followed by a violent civil war. Similarly, another 9/12 cosponsor, FreeRepublic, is a forum for various radical right causes. As ThinkProgress reported, the shooter at the Holocaust museum found a welcome audience for his writings on the website. Despite the inclusion of such anti-government extremists, Rep. Tom Price (R-GA), Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), and Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) all plan to attend and speak
There you have it, folks. I present to you the most vocal critics of our current President: A bunch of violent, racist, uneducated, angry yokels.
Religion : Bush to Chirac on Iraq: "This confrontation is willed by God"
My friend Evan at True/Slant leads us to an amazingly disturbing article in the latest issue of Free Inquiry magazine:

Now out of office, Chirac recounts that the American leader appealed to their "common faith" (Christianity) and told him: "Gog and Magog are at work in the Middle East…. The biblical prophecies are being fulfilled…. This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use this conflict to erase his people's enemies before a New Age begins."
This bizarre episode occurred while the White House was assembling its "coalition of the willing" to unleash the Iraq invasion. Chirac says he was boggled by Bush's call and "wondered how someone could be so superficial and fanatical in their beliefs."
As Evan points out, this isn't the first time we've heard that the administration used religion as a war drum. I daresay it's not the last.
The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter in chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he's bedeviled by a fly in the White House.
PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.
"We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals."
Not that they're necessarily wrong that flies are living creatures who deserve respect, I guess... It's just... wow. I totally called it. As for the Republican response, well, that was less surprising when I got it right. I think that one was more obvious, partially because they kind of have a point. Malkin:
President Obama killed a fly! President Obama killed a fly! "The poise! The cupping!" Swoon. Drool. Faint:
But as Liz Cox Barrett at the Columbia Journalism Review points out, with all of the glee over a dead insect, media outlets, including the one that actually conducted the interview, haven't bothered to report on what the President had to say. So in case you were interested, besides displaying his "Jedi moves," Obama also discussed regulatory reform proposals, health care, Iran, and he slammed Fox News:
Pres. OBAMA: First of all, I've got one television station entirely devoted to attacking my administration. I mean, you know, that's a pretty...
HARWOOD: I assume you're talking about Fox.
Pres. OBAMA: Well, that's a pretty big megaphone. And you'd be hard-pressed, if you watched the entire day, to find a positive story about me on that front.
The planting of this garden was one of the first things I wanted to do as First Lady here at the White House. It was something I had talked about a long time ago. And with the help of you guys, you helped to make this dream a reality. And as you could see when we went down to the garden, can you imagine how thriving that garden is, just how much food grew from a few little seeds and some plantings? So this was a big dream of mine for a while, and it's been so much fun working with you all.
But I also thought that this would be a fun and interesting way to talk to kids about healthy eating and nutrition. The President and Congress are going to begin to address health care reform, and these issues of nutrition and wellness and preventative care is going to be the focus of a lot of conversation coming up in the weeks and months to come. And these are issues that I care deeply about, especially when they affect America's children.
Obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high-blood pressure are all diet-related health issues that cost this country more than $120 billion each year. That's a lot of money. While the dollar figure is shocking in and of itself, the effect on our children's health is even more profound. Nearly a third of the children in this country are either overweight or obese, and a third will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lifetime. In Hispanic and African American communities, those numbers climb even higher so that nearly half of the children in those communities will suffer the same fate. Those numbers are unacceptable.
And, maybe the most important thing she said:
To make sure that we give all our kids a good start to their day and to their future, we need to improve the quality and nutrition of the food served in schools. We're approaching the first big opportunity to move this to the top of the agenda with the upcoming reauthorization of the child nutrition programs. In doing so, we can go a long way towards creating a healthier generation for our kids.
Refreshing. Let's hope the school lunch programs are a start to repairing our nutritional problems.
Culture Critique : On The Murder of Dr. Tiller and Home-Grown Christian Jihadists
I am not a fan of abortion. I do believe in a woman's right to choose, and I do think abortion should be legal, though I think there should be more limits and regulation placed on abortion, more counseling done beforehand, etc. However, whether or not you believe Dr. Tiller was a murderer for performing abortions (many life-saving, by the way), to act as though his murder is justifiable is nothing short of insane. It is disgusting, and it does nothing but hurt the cause of the "pro-life" movement. Do they not see the irony?
Mr. Leach said he and Mr. Roeder had met once, and Mr. Roeder had described similar views to his own. Of Dr. Tiller's death, Mr. Leach said, "To call this a crime is too simplistic," adding, "There is Christian scripture that would support this."
The man being questioned in connection with the investigation is Scott Roader, 51, of Merriam, Kan. [...] Neighbors said they've seen a similar car at the house in Merriam. They describe the ongoings at the house as strange. They said it's a revolving door of men coming and staying there and describe what appear to be religious gatherings.
As someone who has always called what the Jihadists do terrorism, could I get a response from Malkin as to whether she believes this Christianist murder is terrorism as well? Imagine an Islamist fanatic had assassinated a pro-Israel rabbi in a synagogue, and had harassed synagogues for years, including one arrest for bomb materials in his car. Imagine if one of his associates had tried to kill the rabbi before. Would there be any question that this was Islamist terror? So why is this not Christianist terror?
These questions are obvious to me, but obviously they are not obvious to people like Michelle Malkin and Bill O'Reilly, who are clearly enablers of these heinous killers.
Randall Terry, Founder of Operation Rescue, will hold a press conference to discuss how the pro-life movement should deal with Dr. Tiller's death...
Mr. Terry states: "We must not fear, we must not flinch, we must not retreat a single inch. George Tiller was a mass murderer, and we must continue to say so in his death just as we did in his life.
Terry said he was now concerned that the Obama administration "will use Tiller's killing to intimidate pro-lifers into surrendering our most effective rhetoric and actions.
If he means that this will help the passage of the hate-crimes bill and will work against the murder of human beings in cold blood in front of their churches, let's hope he's 100% correct.
Finally, do not be coaxed into thinking these people are just a few bad apples, or fringe elements. They are well-backed, well-financed, and seen as heroes by many. The responses on Twitter are a testament to that.

Thanks, CarlNation, for that summary. Frighteningly, that's all it is - a summary. Check out the Twitter search results for up-to-the-minute hate and bile. I fear for my country when this kind of thing can happen and so many outwardly and hatefully support it. When, inevitably, this insane (accused) murderer ends up on death row, I will protest it, because no murder is fair or right - not even the murder of sub-human cretins like these right wing crazies.
Politics : TPM: Torture Used to Get Evidence of Saddam - Al Queda Link
The thing I keep thinking (and trying not to think, really) is if this is the information that has finally leaked, what else do we still not know? How much further can this possibly go? And can I avoid pulling out my hair over it?
Writing on The Daily Beast, former NBC producer Robert Windrem reports that in April 2003, Dick Cheney's office suggested that interrogators waterboard an Iraqi detainee who was suspected of having knowledge of a link between Saddam and al Qaeda.
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse was questioned on the issue today in two TV interviews. Speaking to CNN, Whitehouse allowed: "I have heard that to be true." To MSNBC, he noted that there was additional evidence of this in the Senate Armed Services committee report, and from Lawrence Wilkerson, former chief of staff to Colin Powell. "This thing is just getting deeper and deeper," said Whitehouse, noting that if it were true, it would significantly bolster the case for prosecutions.
...
What I have learned is that as the administration authorized harsh interrogation in April and May of 2002 -- well before the Justice Department had rendered any legal opinion -- its principal priority for intelligence was not aimed at pre-empting another terrorist attack on the U.S. but discovering a smoking gun linking Iraq and al-Qa'ida.
And the clencher:
In other words, Windrem's report today hardly comes out of the blue. In fact, the mounting evidence that the administration explicitly used torture to make a political case for the war in Iraq is only the latest reason why we need a full investigation of this whole dirty business.
Let's do it. I wish, though I know it will never happen, that President Obama would risk his career and re-election to really get to the bottom of this.
Take the one dated April 3, 2003, two weeks into the invasion, just as Shock and Awe hit its first potholes. Two days earlier, on April 1, a panicky Pentagon had begun spreading its hyped, fictional account of the rescue of Pvt. Jessica Lynch to distract from troubling news of setbacks. On April 2, Gen. Joseph Hoar, the commander in chief of the United States Central Command from 1991-94, had declared on the Times Op-Ed page that Rumsfeld had sent too few troops to Iraq. And so the Worldwide Intelligence Update for April 3 bullied Bush with Joshua 1:9: "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." (Including, as it happened, into a quagmire.)
What's up with that? As Draper writes, Rumsfeld is not known for ostentatious displays of piety. He was cynically playing the religious angle to seduce and manipulate a president who frequently quoted the Bible. But the secretary's actions were not just oily; he was also taking a risk with national security. If these official daily collages of Crusade-like messaging and war imagery had been leaked, they would have reinforced the Muslim world's apocalyptic fear that America was waging a religious war. As one alarmed Pentagon hand told Draper, the fallout "would be as bad as Abu Ghraib."
It's appalling on so many levels: that Rumsfeld thought that polishing up his report with the jingoistic equivalent of a clear plastic binder would win him points; that it apparently worked; that religion was used to promote war in the White House; that it was used despite the fact that it could worsen our chances of success. And we still have Dick Cheney doing a cheerful media tour encouraging us to support torture, which really wasn't torture, but if it was, it was good for us.
We lived under the rule of monsters for eight years. We can't just pretend it didn't happen, we need to fight back in the courts to condemn these people and their actions.
